NETSPACE FACILITIES

Physical Security

  • No windows or external walls
  • A single entry route
  • Controlled 'layered' access
  • Walls that go from concrete base to concrete ceiling
  • Located off the ground floor
  • Motion sensitive surveillance cameras
  • Controlled temperature
  • 24/7 monitored power, moisture, temperature, and smoke

Controlled Access

Access to our site and to the demarcation and server rooms within our site is controlled 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Only authorised personnel or visitors accompanied by authorised personnel are on site at any time. Access is controlled at various 'layers' to allow only very limited access to the server room itself.

Fire Rated Walls and Doors

The server room has been constructed to have a two-hour fire rating, using GIB FyrelineTM throughout on steel framing, a certified fire door and frame from Pacific Door Systems, fire rated boxes in all power and data points, and FirePro sealant on all cables. GIB FyrelineTM is a high performance fire resistant board.

GIB FyrelineTM systems provide from 1/2 hour to 3 hours' fire protection on standard 600mm timber or steel frames. Pacific Door systems are a New Zealand owned company, specialising in high-quality, unique door solutions for a wide range of end users including Hospitals, Secure facilities, Detention facilities and the like. Pacific Door Systems manufacture tested and approved products, and are a recognised leader in this field.

Early Smoke Detection

Netspace has a VESDA aspirating smoke detection system from Vision Systems installed and running. A VESDA system provides for a wider window of opportunity to combat fire before it becomes a problem. All fires have four stages: Incipient (pre-combustion), Visible Smoke, Flaming Fire, and Intense Heat. The chart below shows the progression of fire over a time period.

The incipient stage of smouldering fires provides the widest window of opportunity to detect and control the spread of fire. VESDA smoke detectors can be configured to generate multiple alarms within this window, to provide the time needed to help minimize or prevent fire loss.

More information on VESDA systems can be found at http://www.vesda.com/

Fire Suppression

Netspace chose an FM-200® fire suppression system, form Great Lakes Chemical Corporation. FM-200® suppresses fire by discharging as a gas onto the surface of combusting materials. Large amounts of heat energy are absorbed from the surface of the burning material, lowering its temperature below the ignition point. FM-200® has achieved component recognition from Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and Factory Mutual Research (FM) giving independent weight to the claim that it is a fire extinguishing agent that meets the industry's strictest standards for quality.

No other commercially available fire suppression system extinguishes fires faster than an FM-200® system. FM-200® systems rapidly detect and suppress ordinary combustible, electrical, flammable liquid and gas fires in just seconds, often before the system has finished discharging. Speed is important as fire grows exponentially. Fast acting FM-200® agent minimizes fire damage. Rapid extinguishing reduces harmful combustion products, making FM-200® systems the ideal choice for the safety of both people and the environment.

FM-200® fire suppressant is safe. It:

  • Is proven safe for people through extensive toxicology testing and real-world experience
  • Will not harm sensitive equipment, or irreplaceable data
  • Will not deplete the stratospheric ozone layer and has minimal direct environmental impact-far less than the effects of a catastrophic fire
  • Has a negligible impact on the environment

Cooling Systems

Because electronic system availability is required 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the environmental control system must meet the same demands. Our Liebert Atlas 128 RA-100 Process Coolers were designed with the highest quality components selected for their proven reliability. Microprocessor technology adds automatic sequencing of components to even wear and extend service life. An alarm system and self-diagnostics provide rapid troubleshooting and can prevent a problem before it affects the electronic equipment room environment.

UPS Power

Netspace provides clean filtered power to all electrical equipment in our server room using Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) from Liebert. As a true double conversion UPS, the Liebert UPStation GXT is better able to protect critical systems before, during and after extended outages than line interactive systems. The UPS units also have additional batteries to provide up to 90 minutes of battery capacity at full load to bridge the gap in the event of a complete power failure. For protection against longer power outages we have optional generator power backup.

More information on Liebert UPS systems can be found at http://www.liebert.com/

Internet Firewall

Firewalling is provided to all servers within our server room. Servers are allocated private IP addresses within small subnets, and ports from the public IP address used for the services provided are forwarded by the firewall using iptables.

Fibre Connectivity

Netspace has a dedicated 100mbps fibre connection to CityLink, a fibre mesh around CDB Wellington. We are using iHug for international traffic and some national (see "WIX peering" below). Because CityLink utilises a mesh architecture there is no over-reliance on one central communications point - it effectively provides redundant fibre links between our server room and the world, as a single point of failure not stop data going another way across the mesh to get to its destination.

More information on CityLink can be found at http://www.citylink.co.nz/

WIX Peering

The main Netspace Internet router is peering on WIX using BGP4, which allows data packets from our router to go directly to the routers of other peers without having to go through our ISP. This means that we aren't relying on our ISPs systems and network functioning in order to supply services to users coming from other ISPs - traffic from other ISPs who peer with us will come directly to our router. There are over 120 routers currently peering on WIX. Most ISPs in New Zealand peer on WIX, including Xtra, Clear.Net, iHug and dozens more.

Generator Backup

Netspace can provide generator backup for all applications. The generator provides cover in the event of a power cut that exceeds the life of the UPS batteries.

NETSPACE OPTIONAL FACILITIES

Server Redundancy

We can configure our networks and servers to deliver hot-hot and hot-cold service redundancy for peace of mind and for business continuity.

Disaster Recovery

Netspace has leased secure space in one of CityLink's own server rooms to offer Disaster Recovery (DR) services for business resumption. DR is available within a range of timeframes from seconds to minutes to days. We will be able to help you evaluate your DR needs within a suitable timeframe for your specific application.
